M25 CLOSURE: MOTORISTS TOLD TO STILL VISIT SURREY

Drivers have been told to "continue to come to Surrey" despite an upcoming closure on the M25.

The motorway will be closed in both directions between junctions nine and 10 from 21:00 BST on Friday until 06:00 on Monday.

On BBC Radio Surrey, National Highways was asked about Surrey Day on Saturday and people getting to Chessington World of Adventures.

Senior project manager Jonathan Wade said: "Surrey is an enormous county so please carry on as you are."

The impact from the closure was expected to be "fairly limited to certain areas", Mr Wade said.

Despite this, senior project manager Dan Kittredge said: "Please think about if your journey is absolutely necessary."

He also urged drivers to plan journeys in advance and to allow extra time to reach their destinations.

The section of the M25 is being closed so a new bridge consisting of 68 beams, each weighing 16 tonnes, and a further four beams weighing 40 tonnes can be installed.

This is part of a project to improve safety and reduce pollution.

Drivers have been warned they could receive penalty charges under London's ultra low emission zone (Ulez) rules if they stray off official diversion routes over the weekend.
