EXPIRED DRIVER'S LICENSE? HERE'S WHEN TO RENEW AS LTO STARTS RELEASING PLASTIC CARDS

(SPOT.ph) Drivers whose licenses expired from April to August 2023 best take note of when they can apply for renewal as the Land of Transportation Office (LTO) has started distribution of plastic cards on Monday, April 16.

LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said that around 600,000 plastic cards have been delivered to the office, making him positive that LTO could finally lessen the amount of backlog in issuing physical driver’s licenses.

A total of 3.2 million plastic cards were not delivered to the LTO last year after a Quezon City court issued a Writ of Preliminary Injunction that stemmed from a losing bidder's complaint. The Temporary Restraining order was lifted in March and now, the LTO is using different measures to ensure a sufficient stock for the entire 2024.

Also note that there's an automatic extension for licenses that expired from April 3, 2023, onwards until April 1, 2024, amidst the agency's efforts to address the backlog of plastic-printed driver's licenses.

The following is the schedule of renewal or claiming of plastic-printed cards, as per an official memo that LTO released on March 25.

For driver’s licenses with expiration dates from April 1 to August 31, 2023, and April 1 to April 30, 2024, they are scheduled to renew their licenses beginning April 15 to April 30, 2024.

Meanwhile, for driver’s licenses with expiration dates from September 1 to December 31, 2023, and May 1 to May 31, 2024, they are expected to renew their licenses on May 1 until May 31, 2024.

Then, for driver’s licenses with expiration dates from January 1 to March 31, 2024, and June 1 to June 30, 2024, they can renew their licenses from June 1 to June 30, 2024.

"Failure of the driver to renew his/her driver’s license within the prescribed schedule shall render the license expired," the memorandum read.
